Earlier this year I started having problems with my desktop computer. It was rebooting on it’s own and then one day, it wouldn’t reboot at all. I took it to my local Staples and prayed they could bring it back to life. You see, I hadn’t backed up anything in a long time. I would have lost the last pictures I took with my mom and more than a year of my grandson growing up.
The reason my computer wasn’t working was a virus (apparently my free anti-virus product wasn’t such a bargain after all!). They cleaned it up, I bought good anti-virus software and still didn’t do anything about backing up.
Then I met the Backblaze folks at BlogHer ’13 and they made sure I would change things by giving me a year’s worth of online backup service.
What is Backblaze?
Backblaze is online backup made easy. Backblaze backs up everything on your computer except the operating system, applications, and temporary files. I liked this because I didn’t have to figure out what needed to be saved.
If you’re concerned about security, you can relax. Your data is encrypted on your computer, sent over an encrypted connection, and stored encrypted. You can add your own passphrase for another layer of privacy.
The unlimited data backup for Mac or PC is just $5 a month. No, I have no excuse for my lack of attention to backing up my files.
My Experience with Backblaze
Whether directly connected or over WiFi, If you are connected to the Internet, you are backing up. It took 5 days to backup everything the first time but after that things are backed up constantly. I just checked and a photo I took an hour ago was backed up!
There’s a Backblaze mobile app, that allows users to access, download, experience and share any of the files backed up from their computer to Backblaze on an iPhone, iPad or iPod. I like this because I don’t have room for every single song on my iPhone (yes I need will get a 32 gb when I upgrade).
I’ve tested restoring a file and it’s super easy. If you have documents that change a lot, four weeks of versions with the same name will be saved. Of course, save it with a unique name if you need it longer.
