Tales from the Scale: Week 1

by Kay Lynn on January 15, 2013

Scale

I rejoined Weight Watchers and yesterday was my first progress weigh-in.  As always when cutting back on calories and volume of food I was pretty hungry the first 3 days but it became manageable after that.  It was a good plan week and I’m happy to report a loss of 3 pounds.  Let me shout that:

Loss: 3 Pounds

Victories and Challenges: The biggest victory was that number above but I would say also eating within plan the entire week.  I ended the week with 19 weekly points unused as well as a few exercise points.

Tracking and Healthy Checks: For me to stay on plan I need to track what I eat.  I use the mobile app and track online which makes it easier to keep it up.  Healthy checks are making sure a member eats the recommended portions of food categories such as fruits and vegetables, dairy and healthy oils.

That last one is my biggest challenge. I only met the recommended two teaspoons of healthy oil two days.  Unfortunately, oils in food already prepared don’t count.

Next week:  I purposely didn’t try to start an exercise plan my first week.  I thought it was enough of a change to follow the plan and track.  This week I plan to start tracking exercise and am starting off with a modest goal of seven exercise points.

We’re having a celebration lunch at work Thursday and the menu is barbeque.  It’s hard to stay on plan with corn pudding, pulled pork and potato salad but I will have a plan in place to make sure I am in control.

What’s your victory and challenge this week?

That’s a great strategy trying to ease into things rather than changing a bunch of things at once. You’ll have a much greater chance of success since you’ll be introducing multiple routines at varying points versus trying to adjust a lot of different routines all at once. Good luck!

I only had so much willpower and it was used up those first few days when I thought I was “starving”.

3 lbs is great for the first week. My weight is ok, but I do need to exercise more to keep healthy. It’s too cold to do much right now though. Keep it up!

I’m pretty happy with the loss. It’s even too cold here in Southern California to exercise outside in the early morning (I usually would go at 5:30 am).

Kay, you are absolutely moving in the right direction. Kudos to you! Let me know how the WW experiment goes.. I am slowly progressing myself, but considering trying something new.

Jefferson, I really like Weight Watchers but I know people do well on other programs. Good luck!

Huge congrats! I had great success with weight watchers after my 2nd year university…I totally got lazy 3 weeks before getting my lifetime membership though, I want to kick myself in the ass. I’m trying to figure out if I have the fiances to re-join or try and do it on my own…I know I’d be much more successful re-joining the meetings but don’t know how to make it work with our budget.

Good luck!

Catherine, I did have to decide to invest in my health and pay the monthly pass fee. It’s a matter of health for me as I try to lower my blood sugar.

Congratulations on the 3 pounds Kay Lynn!

I like that you are tracking your foods and also have goals for healthy foods, not just a list of what to avoid.

Congratulations Kay! That is really great progress for your first week. My problem is not weight is exercising, I struggle with making time each day!

Paul, I agree that it’s hard to find the time for exercise. I’m working on that as well.

Great work on your first week! Can you save some of your extra points so you can sample some of the food at work?

Melissa, great idea. I did use some of the weekly points but still had to take care selecting which items to eat. Instead of my favorite pulled pork, I had pulled chicken. Instead of corn pudding, I selected a small side of coleslaw.
